THE first night of finals at the European Short Course Championships held in Rijeka, Croatia started off with a bang as Amaury Leveaux of France clocked a world record during the men's 50 free semifinal round. Leveaux checked in with a time of 20.48 to blast the 20.64 set by Roland Schoeman in South Africa in September. France's Fred Bousquet (21.11), Russia's Sergey Fesikov (21.27), Russia's Evgeny Lagunov (21.31), Italy's Mattia Nalesso (21.32), Italy's Marco Orsi (21.42), Croatia Duje Draganja (21.49) and Ireland's Barry Murphy (21.53) made up the rest of the championship final. Notably, Leveaux also cleared his European record of 20.80 set during prelims this morning. The 12th European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka, Croatia (11-14 December), will surely be an undisputed highlight. Federations from 38 countries have already announced their participation and more than 600 swimmers are expected to compete. Actually, she's doing the OPENING CEREMONY and he's doing the closing. Let's face it: Most people watch the Olympics for the eye candy. Young, healthy, athletic bodies, at the peak of their fitness, clad in REALLY tight-fitting clothing. What other reason can there be for the "sport" of synchronised swimming? Or rhythmic gymnastics? And that Greco-Roman wrestling thing?? Two muscular, sweaty guys with big bulges in their leotards, rubbing crotches and dry humping each other? Sport? Perhaps, but it is also the gayest activity invented since, well, since Greco-Roman wrestling was invented thousands of years ago at the original ancient games and the athletes competed NAKED and covered in oil. It was SUPPOSED to be sexual. That was part of the spectacle. The ancient Greeks were pretty open-minded about that sort of stuff, apparently. So, we have all these fit, healthy, attractive young people from all over the world, almost naked, thrown together for ten days that, for many of them, are likely to be the highlight of their lives. For many it's their first and only opportunitytime to travel abroad. Excitement, sweat, comteptitive rivalry, jealousy, exotic accents, adrenaline, disappointment, loneliness and homesickness all rolled into one. Then combine all that with the notion that sporting performance is enhanced by a little bit of bedroom performance before the big event. Imagine that for a situation primed for sexual tension. And it only comes up once every four years! Strike whilst the iron is HOT, baby. There is certainly lots of anecdotal evidence to suggest a hotbed of naughty goings-on in the Olympic villages. Lots of couples in the sporting world got their start at the Olympics. One guesses they weren't just holding hands. Refer Federica Pellegrini and Laure Manadou. It's international competition, France vs Italy, with prime genetic material at stake. There is no silver medal in this game. And what about the record numbers of little athletic bundles of joy arriving nine months later. I don't know. I've never been. I was prevented from competing by the old apartheid regime, which kept South Africa from sending a team. And also an old fencing injury. (Sure it hurt, but you should have seen the FENCE afterwards.) But mostly I was unable to compete because I'm really crap at most sports. But I digress. The identity of the participants in this particular romantic liaison will remain a closely guarded secret. I think we can say with some certainty that neither of them is Natalie du Toit. Sorry, Nat - bad joke. We're very proud of you, by the way. And I think the stump is kinda sexy. (If anyone in the world hasn't been paying attention, Natalie du Toit is the first amputee (motorcycle accident) EVER to participate in the Olympics. She is cooler than Mrs Ball's chutney.) And we could have made it 2/2 if Oscar Pistorius aka Blade Runner had made it. We can probably also assume that Michael Phelps was not involved, because of the size of the feet. Which probably excludes Ryk Neethling, Roland Schoeman, Ian Thorpe and the rest of them too. They all have these huge flippers for feet. And you know what they say about the size of the feet. Fortunately this is not a complete full frontal video. Those new Speedo and Arena swimsuits leave very little to the imagination. Not that the old tight Speedo in the days of Mark Spitz left much to the imagination either. But I digress, again. And the female sprinters? There seems to be a competition going to see who can have the most revealing shorts. They should be giving out gold medals for best camel foot. I'm sure I'm not the only one perving boobies on pole-vaulters, either. How come are there so many hot chicks who choose to fondle that long pole. And why do so many of them seem to get a nipple stand just before they go for the jump? And of course NOBODY thinks naughty thoughts when those perky gymnasts from China or Russia or Romania or doing the handstand splits. Yeah, right. That's why those Trojan weight-lifting commercials are so funny. But enough of that. This wasn't filmed in Beijing. But it IS 2008, DURING the Olympics. And I think it's funny. THIS IS A PARODY, PEOPLE, Based on the Olympic motto of Citius Altius Fortius - or - Faster, Higher, Stronger. "Jamaica?", you ask. No it was all voluntary. She does seem to be in a hurry, though. Nakon sto su jucer Duje Draganja na 50 metara slobodno i Sasa Impric na 200 metara mjesovito osvojili srebrne medalje na EP u 25-metarskim bazenima u Debrecenu, isto to je, drugog dana natjecanja, ostvarila i Sanja Jovanovic! Dubrovkinja je, u disciplini 100 metara ledjno, bila druga s vremenom 57.94, apsolutnim hrvatskim rekordom. Prvo mjesto i zlatnu medalju osvojila je najbolja ledjasica svijeta, Francuskinja Laure Manaudou, s vremenom 57.34. Treca je bila Grkinja Janine Pietsch s vremenom 58.15. U finalu utrke na 100 m leptir nastupila su dva hrvatska predstavnika. Duje Draganja je bio peti s vremenom 51.53, a Mario Todorovic posljednji, osmi, u vremenu 52.06. Pobijedio je Srbin Milorad cavic s vremenom 50.53. Ivan Tolic i Monika Babok nisu se uspjeli kvalificirati u finale u svojim disciplinama.
